1-My Deer Friend Nokotan:
This show has far too many screws loose. I am not understating it when I say the first episode was absolutely insane, like bat S$#T crazy levels of insane. I’m even having trouble writing to you about it. That’s how insane this new show is. Basically, our main character is a half-dear girl who can speak to Dear or summon Dear whenever she wants (it is not explained). She just does whatever she wants despite how infuriating our other main character finds it.
I can’t say the show made me laugh out loud or anything like that. But it did make me chuckle here and there due to the extreme levels of Idiocy that were being thrown my way. So for some reason you just can’t stop watching.
2-Wistoria: Wand and Sword
Wistoria Wand and Sword is one of the must-watches this summer and after watching the first episode I can see why. It takes a little bit of all the other shonen anime that we have come to know and love and is deciding to do it’s own thing.
Addressing the elephant in the room though, yes, the black clover similarities are insane, dare I say copyrightable. The main character in this show is exactly the same as Asta except Asta ain’t a punk @s$ bi….. (Only joking haha)
Look I personally have no issue with taking inspiration from older anime. In this medium overlap happens all the time. And if Isekai can do it then so can other genres such as shonen. In this case, Wistoria is doing the whole magical school thing with a main character that can't use magic. And it happens to be doing it well. So no complaints from me.
Also bonus points for having not horrible CGI. Always a plus there.
3-The Elusive Samurai:
The Elusive Samurai probably had the best first episode out of all the new anime that I’m talking about today. It is the most visually stunning too, even being slightly better than Wistoria Wand and Sword. The show clearly takes inspiration from the classic kingdom manga, which isn’t a problem by any means since if Kingdom is your inspiration you’ve got to be doing something right.
A Young noble losses his kingdom and must now work together with unlikely allies to regain control of his domain. Sounds a lot like Kingdom to me. Only 2 episodes are out at the moment so I can’t really critic the show. But I will say it’s the show that I’m most excited to watch outside of my weekly review shows.
4-My wife has no emotion:
There is actually a lot more romance anime that I could have spoken about in this post. But all of those are on the problematic spicy side rather than the more traditional adorable side. This anime is the latter. It’s a switch off your brain and watch the cute vibes unfold kind of show. I had only heard good things about the manga before the show came out and after watching the first episode I can honestly understand the romantic appeal of the show.
Since his partner is well, (no glossing over it) a flipping C3PO it or she (I don’t even know at this point) has to show love and affection through action and minute gestures. The kind of gestures that are ignored by people everyday since we can just pour our hearts out in emotion. The way the anime does this is adorable and rather wholesome, a lot more wholesome than I thought it would be.
Because being honest when I heard that there was a new romance anime coming out about a dude who has robot for a wife I thought the anime community was on its usual freak sh#t and was expecting the worst. But thankfully I was proven wrong and the show is a lot more family friendly than that.
5-Failure frame:
Failure frame is really frustrating because the story all in all is pretty interesting. Not amazing. But definitely on the better side when it comes to Isekai that I’ve watched. Standard power fantasy except this time the whole class is involved and our main character has to prove all of them wrong in some way or the other. The difference here is that you actually feel for the main character.
As you’re watching and you really do want him to show all the people that doubted him how much better he is.
The only issue is the animation is sooooo bad sometimes, goodness gracious. It's so bad sometimes that it's downright distracting.
Which I find hilarious because if you watch the show you’ll see that there is definitely money in the budget. It's just not for fight scenes and action sequences. It’s for…..other things.
6-Shoshimin: how to become ordinary
Watching “Shoshimin: how to Become Ordinary” honestly feels like you’re watching a movie rather than an anime. The way it captures the vibe of its characters with the film-esque screen ratio is a lovely sight to behold. This show does seem to be quite the “think piece” in that it is doing a lot to let you know that it isn’t like other shows so that it stands out, and honestly, I'm all here for it.
It's your typical slice of life is what I would like to say but I honestly can’t the show just seems to be cut from a different cloth and you can definitely feel this while watching it, especially during the interactions between the two main characters.
The show isn’t going to be for everyone anyway. It's not going to be too loud or funny or gritty or any of those things. Right now it looks like a show that will take its time in making us sad, while we watch not making us all sad in the first 2 or 3 episodes.
The Elusive Samurai made me curious and I will definitely give it a try!
