Our next stop on the spicy romance anime train is step sister station. Feel free to board and enjoy the ride. The only things at risk are your mental faculties, personal viewing choices, and judgment by your peers. But nevertheless, ALL ABOARD!
For all those familiar with this controversial side of anime, you know that when the two words “step” and “siblings” are uttered it is either time to run in the other direction as fast as you can, or grab a chair and watch the dumpster fire burn in front of you. There is no in-between. In the case of Days with my stepsister, we’re going to grab a chair, get ourselves some popcorn, and watch the tea pour slowly into our cups. Let’s get right to it.
2-Days with my step sister
Usually, when step-sibling romance anime is made it is paired with the comedy genre. I believe this is because even in Japan they know that this is quite the topic to be commercializing and rather inappropriate. So they throw a bunch of comedy into the show to soften the blow of what we’re watching. As if to say,
“LOOK we know this is very weird, BUT IT’S JUST A JOKE so please just chill out and watch the show if you like”.
The only problem is that sometimes, a few daring or brave souls in the anime world decide to make stepsister anime without any of the comedy. Shows that take the possible relationship between the siblings very seriously and don’t beat around the bush. That is when shows like Days with my step-sister are born.
Days with my stepsister is a very slow burn. The possible relationship between Yuta and Saki (our main characters) isn’t thrown in our face. In fact even now after 7 weeks of the show being out I still don’t know whether they are actually going to jump that step sibling taboo cliff and actually do what they really shouldn’t be doing. Why watch then? Because the show teases the possibility oh so well. It gives you tiny hints and glimmers that they may actually “jump the cliff” but you don’t know how or when.
This show is definitely not for the average anime viewer. In terms of what I consider watch difficulty when it comes to watching anime, you have to have a lot of experience points saved up to fight these kinds of bosses in the anime game.
What I will say though is that the way the conversations flow in the show feels very natural. Nothing feels forced and nothing happens just for the sake of happening. There is no sense of “OH I’m in a raunchy step-sibling anime so I better act like this now”. Everything is said and done with meaning behind it and that’s why the show is probably doing so well this season in comparison to other shows.

For all I know we might be pleasantly surprised and there’s nothing to worry about. But then again, the show is called Days with my STEPSISTER so I wouldn’t be so sure. Besides, as you can see from the ranking above, if we didn’t watch it then they wouldn’t make it. (Food for thought).
